IP Block Lists Myths and Misconceptions

Over the years we have heard all kinds of false and incorrect information posted around the net regarding the use of blocklists as a [ non ] reliable form of protection against a wide range of threats.

This has led to the development of many common misconceptions among many users.

Some of this false information may be part of a deliberate campaign to discredit the blocklists and their maintainers, or an attempt to trick people into lowering their defences by convincing people they are either more at risk or wasting their time.

While in some cases the false information has been outright fabricated lies intended to do damage, it also seems that a lack of technical knowledge mixed with extremely poor research simply results in bad and incorrect information being spread with no attempt to seek out the actual facts.

Disinformation

Disinformation is false or inaccurate information that is spread deliberately. It may include the distribution of forged documents, manuscripts, and photographs, or propagation of malicious rumors and fabricated intelligence. Disinformation should not be confused with misinformation, information that is unintentionally false. [ Reference - wikipedia.com ]

Many people involved in spreading disinformation are no doubt either on the blocklists themselves, possibly working for anti-p2p groups or feel strongly against others wanting to be able to protect themselves while engaging in P2P activities.

Unfortunately others may just be badly misinformed but continue spreading the incorrect information without any attempt to verify or research the claims. This just perpetuates the false information because they do not understand exactly what it is they are talking about, and leads other people to pick up on these false beliefs.

A lack of knowledge or deep ignorance will not prevent these people from assuming that what they are spreading is anything but the truth. Feel free to pity these people, but please do not take them or their ridiculous claims seriously.
